After discussing the decision to move from Manchester City to Al Ahly, winger Riyad Mahrez shared his motivations. He explained that his decision was motivated by the desire to find new challenges and opportunities in his career. Mahrez noted that the Saudi club presented him with an exciting project and ambitious plans for the future. He also expressed his gratitude to Manchester City and admitted that he had spent unforgettable years there, but he believes that a change of environment will help him develop and reach new heights.
“I had two years left on my contract at City and could have continued playing in England, but I made the decision to leave. I felt it was an opportunity that might not come again. It was probably the right time to leave, as I had already spent five years at Manchester City and won everything, but to be honest, I still feel like there was something missing in my career there. I have always set high goals for myself and even though I achieved a lot at City, I was looking for new challenges and opportunities for personal and professional growth. When the offer from Al Ahly came, I found it unique and exciting. The Saudi Club presented me with ambitious plans for the future and a project that interested me.
I had some unforgettable years at Manchester City and achieved exceptional results. I won many trophies and was part of a team that enjoyed great success. I am grateful to the club, the coaches, team-mates and fans for their support and the opportunity to play at such a high level. However, despite all these achievements, I still feel that something is missing. “I had two years left on my contract at City and I could have continued to play in England, but I decided to leave, I felt it was an opportunity. It might not happen again. It was probably the right time to leave because I had already spent five years at Manchester City and won everything, but to be honest, I still feel that something was missing in my career there.
In the last Champions League matches, I was unable to play in the semi-finals or the final, despite the fact that in previous seasons I always started first-team matches and had a notable impact on the team. It was disappointing for me and I felt that my career required new challenges and new opportunities. When I received an offer to spend the next four years in Saudi Arabia, I decided to accept it. This country is Muslim and my family and I feel comfortable here. Being part of a football club in Saudi Arabia represents a new step in my career.
I am aware that my decision may provoke different reactions and opinions, especially as I am leaving one of the best clubs in Europe. However, I believe in pursuing one's goals and aiming for personal and professional development. After spending several years at Manchester City and achieving great success, I felt that my career needed new inspiration and new challenges.
Saudi Arabia represents a unique opportunity for me to discover a new culture and a new football environment. I am convinced that I can contribute to the development of football in this country and help my new team succeed.
I am grateful to Manchester City for everything they have done for me and for the support I have received from the fans. I am proud of my time at this club and will always look back on these years with warmth and respect. My aim has always been to achieve the best results and I will continue this quest in the next chapter of my career in Saudi Arabia.
